Tree Risk Assessment Surveys

Every programme starts with a full read of the tree stock. An assessed arborist walks the site with a striking measure and a notepad, recording each crown in four zones: the root plate at the ground, the trunk and its flare, the branch unions and the outer scaffold. We note lean, wound history, decay pockets, split or rubbing stems and the way the soil holds the root mass. Findings are given a numbered tag and a plain-language priority so an estate manager can see at a glance what needs a watching brief, what needs a crown intervention this season and what simply asks to be left alone. The survey delivers a ranked action list, a recommended revisit calendar and a clear map of the year ahead rather than a long list of alarming words.

Crown Pruning and Reduction

Where the survey says a crown asks for work, the climbing crew sets to the reduction with restraint. Our aim is never to over-prune and never to shear; it is to shorten sail, open a shaded window, clear a sign or a building line and relieve strain on an aged union by taking weight from the tips rather than cutting long arms back to stubs. Deadwood and cross stems that rub are removed, congested fine growth is thinned, and each finished cut is left clean and sloping so water sheds and bark rolls in evenly. The crew photographs the canopy beforehand and after, logs every limb on the tag, and leaves a crown that still reads as the tree it was built to be. This measured approach protects the tree, the neighbour and the boundary in equal measure.

Canopy Rigging and Sectional Removals

Some removals have to happen shoulder to shoulder with paving, railings, parked cars and glass. Sky Blue Arboriculture does these entirely in sections. Every limb is tied to a lowering line that runs back through a block to ground handlers, so not one cut piece falls free; each section is tallied on the ring counter and checked against the removal plan before the crew turns to the next. The stem is headed in stages, each topped section walked down, until the last stub and root are cleared and the ground is swept. Because the whole load is handled, the only thing that ever touches the ground is the corner we choose for it. This is the exact, controlled method that keeps tight municipal courtyards and private terraces open and unharmed while a whole tree comes out.

Young Tree Structuring

The cheapest crown correction is the one never needed later. This programme walks the newly planted trees through their first structure-building years at a steady, planned pace. The crew keeps a single straight leader, spaces the main scaffold branches along the stem, eases branch angles that are too tight to hold bark, and lifts the crown only slowly so the lower trunk thickens and grows strong. Pruning wounds are kept small, wood is never stripped from the whole stem, and the protective bark lines stay in good health. After the first eight or nine seasons the tree stands with a clean, well-spaced, storm-tolerant structure that needs almost no corrective work for the rest of its life. For an estate planting a whole avenue of lime or a line of oak, this programme is the foundation beneath every later year of calm.

Root Zone and Soil Care

Above the ground a tree shows its whole story in the leaves; below it answers only to the soil. We inspect the root plate flare, test the compaction of the ground where paving has squeezed it, and work out a plan that helps the tree without harming the walkway. Care typically means radial hand tine aeration in the drip line, adding a chipped mulch ring with the correct clear trunk collar, lifting surface roots carefully and coordinating any necessary cut with the paving contractor so the tree keeps its best structural anchor. Where drainage is the problem we relieve it at the source rather than dressing the symptom. The result is better uptake, fewer premature leaf drops and a canopy that can carry far heavier weight through the summer storms. This quiet, unseen line is the long game behind a strong crown.

Storm Response and Cleanup

When the wind turns a neighbourhood into a shattered line, the crew answers fast and in order. We release a hanging split in a controlled sequence, clear a limb from a roof without dragging it across the ridge, take out the whole fallen tree at the boundary and grind the stub flush so planting can return next season. Sound trunks that have survived are stabilised, weakened crowns are given a measured reduction, and all debris is chipped away at the site so the boundary comes back clean before dark. The emergency line keeps calm priorities: make the place safe first, then clear the access, then take the tidy-up as far as the daylight allows. Municipal storm duty likes a number we can call round the clock, which is part of what we provide every winter.
